Internazionale has ensured that the decision for the Italian championship falls in the last round. The team of coach Simone Inzaghi won 3-1 at Cagliari and thus still has a chance of title prolongation.
Inter has come to 81 points due to the victory. That is two less than AC Milan, who in the last game at Sassuolo on May 22 will have enough of a draw to become champions in Serie A for the first time since 2011. Inter will play the last game at home against Sampdoria.
The defending champion first had to win at Cagliari on Sunday evening to have a chance at the title. AC Milan had won 2-0 against Atalanta earlier in the evening through hits from Rafael Leão and Theo Hernandez.
With Stefan de Vrij in the base, Inter started well. Milan Skriniar seemed to score the opening goal early on, but the goal was disallowed due to hands. Matteo Darmian headed Inter in the 25th minute on a pass from Ivan Perisic.
Lautaro Martínez made it 2-0 in the second half after a quick attack. But Charis Lykogiannis brought the tension back a few minutes later with a hard shot. Martínez made the 3-1 in the final phase on a pass from Roberto Gagliardini.
Denzel Dumfries joined Darmian in the second half. De Vrij played the entire match. Kevin Strootman stayed on the bench at Cagliari.
