The race to catch up comes too late – Germany loses the start

For Germany, the first game of the Ice Hockey World Championship was a real hit: it was against defending champions Canada. It looked like a swatter for a long time – until the final phase.

The German national ice hockey team lost their opening game at the World Cup against Canada. Coach Toni Söderholm’s team lost 5-3 to the defending champions. It was already 3:5 after the second third, before the German selection started catching up in the last third.

Marc Michaelis (28th), Matthias Plachta (42nd) in the power play and NHL shooting star Moritz Seider (53rd) scored the goals for the selection of the German Ice Hockey Association (DEB ). Cole Sillinger (9′), Pierre-Luc Dubois (18′, 32′), Kent Johnson (34′) and Noah Gregor (38′) scored for 27-time world champions Canada.

Germany is already challenged again in the second game in Group A against Slovakia on Saturday (from 7:20 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). At the start on Friday, the Olympic bronze medalist defeated France, which is replacing the Russian selection in the 85th title fights because of the war of aggression against Ukraine, with a lot of effort 4:2.

Other DEB opponents in Group A are France (May 16/7:20 p.m.), Denmark (May 19/3:20 p.m.), Italy (May 20/3:20 p.m.), Kazakhstan (May 22/3:20 p.m.) and Switzerland (May 24/3:20 p.m.).
