Grammy-winning Yankee rapper Young Thug, aka Jeffery Williams, who has performed twice in Finland, has been arrested.
The rapper is accused of conspiracy to violate U.S. RICO law. RICO comes from the words Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. By law, a person can be convicted if he or she belongs to a criminal organization.
Williams’ record label Young Stoner Life, or YSL, is in big trouble as 28 people associated with the company have been taken over by the police. Persons have been charged with serious charges of murder, robbery and drug trafficking. Among the accused are, among others, rappers Gunna and Yak Gotti.
The lyrics as evidence
U.S. media CCN says in its article that the lyrics of the rapper’s songs have been used as evidence in the case, among other evidence. The use of lyrics has spoken to Americans about whether the words in a rapper’s songs fall within the scope of free speech.
This is not the first time the lyrics have been used as evidence in criminal cases. New York State senators introduced a bill that would prevent the use of art as evidence in criminal cases. Among others, Jay-Z, Meek Mill and Big Sean have supported the initiative.
The following sentences, among others, have been used as evidence.
– I’ve never killed anyone, but I have to do something for that body.
– I’m getting ready to drop them off.
Williams has performed in Finland at the 2015 Blockfest and in 2017 at the Flow Festival.
