Police added that the 29-year-old suspected gunman, who remained at the scene, has been taken into custody on charges of first degree murder. No information was released about the motive for the shooting.
Payne, who made waves in college basketball at Michigan State, was drafted 15th in 2014 by the Atlanta Hawks. However, he failed to impress with that team. He then played in the NBA for Minnesota Timberwolves (2014-2017) and Orlando Magic (2018). He also acted in Greece for Panathinaikos, in China for Nanjing and in France for Villeurbanne. Via the Turkish Ormanspor, Payne ended up at the Lithuanian Utena last year. He then returned to the US without a club.
