Macron proposes new ‘political community’ with Ukraine | Abroad

French President Emmanuel Macron envisions a new kind of “political community” in Europe that will accommodate countries such as Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, he reiterated that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will take years, if not decades.

Macron spoke at the closing ceremony of the so-called Conference on the Future of Europe. Eight hundred citizens there give their advice for the future of the EU, which they discussed for a year. Macron was one of the driving forces behind that project.

The French president supported the advice to make treaty changes, he said in his speech. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated earlier in the day that he was open to such changes in order to make the EU more democratic and transparent.

Macron also favors the idea of introducing majority voting in certain EU policy areas. Now, important themes often require unanimity. Von der Leyen stated that this rule hinders the decisiveness of Brussels.
