Demos and protests on May Day in Berlin. But there wasn’t a lot of political message in it. A comment from BZ editor-in-chief Miriam Krekel.

As they say? There used to be more tinsel – and in addition to more snow at Christmas, there was definitely more May 1st, especially more politics.

More messages, more background and not just pure anger, violence, destruction and a blind indiscriminate juxtaposition of mostly hateful messages.

The bitterest of all messages, however, is that anti-Semites are marching in the front row at the demos on “Labour Day”. So we have an abundance of “no opinion, but against everything”, empty speeches, repeated “Shh…” calls and, as an innovation, the lowest protest in our country. These people are not only demanding the end of Israel, they are always celebrating Jews who were injured or killed in attacks.

More political messages? Putin is a pig and so are cops, yuppies out and all of Berlin hates the police.

Not to forget the eggs thrown at Berlin’s ruler Franziska Giffey. She took the shock moment outwardly. “At least the eggs were fresh,” she tried with a little humor to the BZ It certainly felt anything but funny…

But who wants to talk when you can throw eggs? Political message? No balls – but unfortunately a lot of hate.
