Review: Bloc Party :: Alpha Games

Bloc Party were once one of the most exciting bands in the world. Their first three albums were a voyage of discovery as the Londoners continued to evolve and rediscover. But the old rule also applies to Bloc Party that most acts have a maximum of three outstanding albums. Although they played on a high level with FOUR, they seemed noticeably told. After that they crumbled.

Bloc Party 2.0 now serve as a pure Kele Okereke vehicle and release their first long player in six years, ALPHA GAMES. The return to the SILENT ALARM sound doesn’t exactly help drummer Louise Bartle and bassist Justin Harris to develop their own profile. The finesse and delicateness of the early days are largely missing.

If you accept all this as well as the fact that this album is one single retro trip, it works very well with its rougher gait. In addition to some nonsense, it also offers the dark “The Girls Are Fighting”. The chorus of “You Should Know The Truth” is unnerving, but Lissack’s guitar lets the song fall like butter. Even if ALPHA GAMES strives for a lot of energy, it will never be as good as it used to be.
