After Anthony Caci (21) and Aymen Barkok (24), FSV Mainz 05 has presented the third new signing for the coming season. Tenth in the Bundesliga presented returnee Danny da Costa on Friday afternoon. The 28-year-old right-back had already spent the second half of the 2020/21 season with Rheinhessen and will come on a free transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer. At Bruchweg he has now signed a contract until 2025.
“Danny da Costa didn’t just leave a sporting mark here during his loan in the second half of 2020/21. He is an incredibly experienced, strong defensive all-rounder and also a great person who, with his good character and mentality, immediately integrated himself into the team and lived the values of Mainz 05. The contact between Mainz 05 and Danny has always remained close even after the end of the loan. It’s nice that we can now welcome him permanently to the 05 family,” said FSV sporting director Martin Schmidt.

Under coach Bo Svensson, da Costa made 16 Bundesliga appearances and set up one goal. As a regular player, he played a key role in staying up in the league after a miserable preliminary round. “My time at Mainz 05 was short, but it is definitely one of the most exciting and special of my career. What we have achieved together as a team, but also as a whole club in these six months, was extraordinary. Mainz 05 has a special DNA, sporty and above all in cooperation. The values of the club are not just written on paper, but are lived by each individual and suit me very well as a person. In addition, Bo Svensson is not only a professional coach, but above all a great human being, who gave me a lot and will also help me in my further development. I felt very comfortable at the club from day one and I’m really looking forward to being part of Mainz 05 again from the new season,” said the right-footed player.
