Review: Honeyglaze :: Honeyglaze

Oh, sweet bird of youth: how great it must be to do everything for the first time – to start a band, for example. Honeyglaze from London came together because songwriter, singer and guitarist Anouska Sokolow didn’t want to be the lonely girl with a guitar, but she really wanted to be on stage. So she brought friends in: bassist Tim Curtis and drummer Yuri Shibuichi don’t seem like Sokolow’s humble companions.

In songs like “Burglar”, the instrumental “Half Past” and the noisy opener “Start”, the trio develops a post-grunge power that is left beautifully raw by producer Dan Carey and at the same time led into pop realms. The real strength of Honeyglaze lies in the pop song of British tradition: “Shadows” combines a jangly guitar melody with teenage fear lyrics (“Sentimental words / They always lose their meanings / If they’re never seen or heard / Only when I’m dreaming”) and comes very close to post-punk heroes like Orange Juice.

“Creative Jealousy” and “I Am Not Your Cushion” are sweet and scratchy, with catchy hooks, while “Souvenir” settles into a delicately melancholic indie-pop vibe (and presumably sounds like if Sokolov had remained a solo act). Also strong is the nostalgic “Female Lead”, which takes up both racist and anti-feminist clichés. Honeyglaze try a lot of things stylistically, their debut is supposed to be the “opposite of a concept album” (quote). They can always make a concept album again later, but it doesn’t have to be.
