‘Three-country train’ is not coming to Belgium yet this year | Inland

The ‘three country train’ Liège-Maastricht-Aachen, which has been announced for some time, will not run on the Belgian rail network this year. The start-up is now planned for the end of 2023 at the earliest, according to the Dutch transport company Arriva.

The ‘three country train’ is already running between the Dutch city of Maastricht and the German city of Aachen, but the Belgian section of the international connection is still missing. That part will now not be added until the end of 2023 at the earliest.

“We will have a clearer picture by the end of this year. We can then link a more precise timeline to the next steps,” says a spokesperson for the Dutch province of Limburg. The connection was also discussed during the Thalassa Summit, the consultation between the Belgian and Dutch governments in Ghent earlier this week.

The Maastricht-Aachen section was launched at the beginning of 2019. Belgium could not yet be served at that time because the Belgian authorities imposed additional conditions. For example, the trains must be equipped with the European safety system ETCS.
