City list Wervik licks wounds: “an ugly political region”
The City List is now investigating whether this motion is legally correct. With Vooruit’s change of course, the agreement that Open VLD member Bert Verhaeghe will soon take over from Mayor Youro Casier will also expire. Verhaeghe is also very disappointed as a person.
“I would be lying if I said that personally that is not a disappointment. That really hurts a lot. We set up an entire process together with the group of the City List, but also together with Vooruit. We had a multi-year plan that was being implemented and then the knife is stabbed in the back just because of posts. That hurts a lot,” it sounds.
The motion of no confidence so that coalition partner Vooruit can continue with CD&V comes as a blow to the City List, which consists of Open VLD, Positive Project and Groen. The cartel list has now put its heads together and straightened its back, with the support of the national parties.

“Constructive motion of no confidence suffices”
But professor Herwig Reynaert, who specializes in local politics, puts the City List with both feet on the ground. According to him, the new municipal decree is clear and a constructive vote of no confidence, as submitted in Wervik, is sufficient to knock out a coalition partner. For example, the parties in Wervik were no longer on the same page with regard to residential care centers.
