The sale of bikes shoots up 41% in Spain in just five years

The sale of bicycles in Spain has grown 41% since 2015. For the second consecutive year, it has exceeded one and a half million units dispatched in shops, to which should be added the tens of thousands acquired in the second hand market. The mountain ones continue to lead the demand, but the growth of electric5% in just one year, reflects the way in which the sustainable and active mobility. Everything, even though it is a sector with hardly any public aid and that many cities remain in minor cloths in terms of cycling infrastructure.

The data is extracted from the study that has just been made public by the Association of Brands and Bicycles of Spain (AMBE), which produces this report in collaboration with Cofidis. The total billed of the sector in 2021 (includes bikes and all kinds of accessories) was 2,888 million euros, 10.76% more than in 2020 and twice as much as in 2015. As for bikes, last year 1,571,368 units left the stores6,000 more than in the previous year and 470,000 more than in 2015. battery powered bikes they accounted for 1% of the total in 2013, while today they are 14.2%, which greatly influences the capital of this sector. The average price, in fact, is close to 1,000 euros (€984), largely due to the average 2,861 euros that a assisted bikebut also for the road models (€2,303) and the launch of the gravelwhich have grown by more than 50% and are not exactly cheap (€1,116).

The drop in the urban bikes (they fall 12%), but no one is unaware that the metropolises have more cyclists than ever, so the explanation, in any case, is in the transition to electric bikes. 223,561 units were sold, 5.1% more than in 2021 and almost six times more than in 2016. Disturbing, however, and there is no single logical explanation, the drop in sales (-8.6%) of children’s bikes. Some may receive them directly with a battery, or they may prefer scooters, or they may skip the small procedure and go directly to the mountain one. Or it could be, simply, that the second hand prevails when you know that that bicycle is going to be too small for it on a television news.

All these figures also have a labor effect, with 362 companies, 180 national manufacturers and 3,028 retail stores (47 more in 2021). All these figures exceed those of 2020, but not those of five years ago. In the report carried out in 2016 also by AMBE it was estimated that 45% of the companies that are dedicated to the cycling sector are in Cataloniawhile 18% are in the Madrid’s community and País Vasco and Comunitat Valenciana hold 9% each. According to the report, the bicycle sector employs 23,221 people, 27.73% of all workers in the various sporting goods guilds.

The growth of electric could have been far superior if the stores hadn’t had serious supply problems and lack of stock. Another reassuring fact for the union is the trust placed in people who know, since almost 85% of the bike shopping were made in specialized shops.
