In 2021, Eva Lys surprisingly won the German tennis championship, but the big stars of the DTB did not appear in Biberach an der Riss at the end of December either. However, Lys has now impressively demonstrated that she can keep up with the big ones.
At the WTA tournament in Stuttgart, Lys surprised with her first victory on the tour: World number 342 defeated Viktorija Golubic from Switzerland (rank 38) 5: 7, 7: 5 and 7: 5 despite being behind in a set. The match lasted a total of 3:09 hours.
Lys played bold and courageous against Golubic. With her powerful forehand she left the world number 38. run and took the lead at the beginning with 4:1 and 5:3. At the end of the first set, the favorite from Switzerland improved and made better use of the weaknesses of the young Germans, who sometimes lacked patience. But Lys fought and used her first set ball to equalize in the second round. The fact that she gave back a 4:2 in the last set did not deter Lys from her path.
Striking: Lys and Golubic sometimes had big problems winning their own service games. The DTB talent was only able to fend off one of ten breakballs, the Swiss at least 17, but Lys also fought for 27 chances to steal the service from her opponent. Overall, the German ultimately won 126 points, seven more than Golubic.
The next highlight is not long in coming. In the round of 16, Lys now meets Iga Swiatek from Poland, who is currently number one in the tennis world.
By the way, Lys fought his way through the qualification in Swabia and defeated Cristina Bucsa from Spain (129th in the world) and Kathinka von Deichmann from Liechtenstein (243th in the world) on her way to the main draw. “These are emotions that you don’t have anywhere else,” cheered the beacon of hope at “Eurosport” after qualifying.
Lys was born in the Ukraine and emigrated to Germany with her family when she was a small child. However, many of their relatives were still living in the capital, Kyiv, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began at the end of February. At the beginning of March, Lys openly addressed the shameful behavior of some Russian colleagues.

“Many Russian players who are here behave disrespectfully towards those who are affected by the Ukraine war,” Lys complained to “Eurosport”: “They laugh about it, make fun of it. Some demonstratively put on a tracksuit in the Russian national colors .”
In the meantime, Russia’s tennis players are only allowed to appear under a neutral flag.
