Eintracht fans as super spreaders? First the sensation, then the infection

It’s been five days since Eintracht Frankfurt made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League against Barcelona. Many supporters of the SGE were there – and are now reporting back with less good news.

Did you bring more than just the away win? Eintracht Frankfurt shot the great FC Barcelona out of the Europa League last Thursday in their own stadium (3:2). Around 30,000 fans from home were also there. And they are now reporting back on social networks with rather less pleasant news.

Because it seems that a large number of Eintracht fans got infected with the corona virus on the trip. On Twitter, numerous supporters report positive corona tests. The word “superspreading event” is not only mentioned once in connection with the game.

Sports journalist Benjamin Heinrich writes: “Why has it been so quiet here since the great Barcelona trip with #SGE? Unfortunately, I brought more than just the away win with me. I’ve been completely flat with strong symptoms since the weekend. So it’s going to be here for a while quiet. Everyone stay healthy & take care of yourselves.”

Under his post, the discussions revolved around both the trip to Spain and the possible opening of stadiums and events too early. A Twitter user writes: “I feel like everyone who was in Barcelona is positive – including me”. He pushes afterwards, however, that it was worth it despite everything.

Also in Barcelona was t-online editor Lars Wienand. In a tweet he writes: “Superspreading event SGE-Barca. There are a number of other people affected under the replies. I’m also there now. And apart from in the hotel room, I wasn’t in closed rooms and if I was, then with a mask.”

He also reports that “hardly anyone wore a mask in the stadium,” as is also the case in the Bundesliga. That’s why you didn’t feel particularly unsafe in the huge Camp Nou, and in the entrance area he also experienced less crowding than before the first leg in Frankfurt, for example. “A lot of people put on the masks there.”

Sporadically, the responsible security staff in Barcelona pointed out the need to wear a mask – probably nothing more. “And there were also many opportunities for infection on arrival and departure in buses and on the plane.”

After beating Barcelona, Eintracht Frankfurt are in the semi-finals of the Europa League and meet West Ham United on April 28th.
