3rd division: Freiburg II wins in Mannheim and secures relegation, football | 3rd League – SWR – Regional

After it was clear that promotion would probably not work out, disappointment spread in Mannheim in the previous week. Nevertheless, Patrick Glöckner and his team wanted to present themselves positively. The goal: get the best possible place in the table at the end of the season. But the Freiburg junior footballers, who have nothing to do with relegation in their first third division season, also wanted to play freely.

Glöckner quarrels with Mannheim chances utilization

A balanced early phase developed in front of around 9,000 spectators in Mannheim. Freiburg’s Julius Tauriainen and Emilio Kehrer with a first approach in front of Waldhof keeper Timo Königsmann. The Waldhöfer then had the first real chance of the game in the 18th minute. But Marcel Seegert failed with his header at the strong parrying Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu and Marcel Costly could not accommodate the ball in the follow-up shot. “We had a double chance after a standard situation – you have to push something like that in there,” SVW coach Glöckner assessed the scene after the game at MegantaSport. “But we are currently not in a position to convert the important, big goal chances,” continued Glöckner.

Vermeij shoots Freiburg into the lead

The Breisgauer were not impressed by the good chances of the Mannheimers and tried to play quickly forward. Successful in the 38th minute: Claudio Kammerknecht found Emilio Kehrer in the penalty area with a wide cross. He wanted to head the ball on goal, but didn’t hit the ball properly. This landed the ball right in front of Vincent Vermeij’s feet. He finished free from five meters in front of goalkeeper Königsmann and converted confidently to 1-0 for Freiburg. The Mannheimers complained about offside, but the goal counted. As a result, the hosts struggled and had few offensive ideas. So it went into the break with a narrow lead for Freiburg.

Waldhof’s offensive efforts remain unsuccessful

After the change of sides, Waldhof coach Glöckner brought in Stefano Russo for Hamza Saghiri and the experienced Marc Schnatterer for Niklas Sommer. As a result, the Mannheimers switched to a back three and pushed the pace. The picture was similar to that at the beginning of the first half: both teams played very intensively without having any great chances to score. Waldhof then tried to build up more and more pressure, but the young Freiburg team stood well and defended calmly. Therefore, despite intensive efforts, the Waldhöfer did not score and the Freiburg team celebrated as in the first leg, a narrow success against Mannheim. “It was deserved. We allowed one or two chances through set pieces. We had created good opportunities over the 90 minutes. So I think the three points are not undeserved,” said Freiburg coach Thomas Stamm after the game at MagentaSport .

With the 1-0 win, he secured his place in the league and is still eleventh in the table. The SVW remains seventh and is now eleven points behind Braunschweig, who is third in the table and is on the relegation place. Next Saturday, the Waldhöfer have to go to Osnabrück, Freiburg meets in Havelse.
