As the world’s first city to charge entry fees for day visitors, Venice collected over five million euros in 2024. Typically, visitors paid ten euros, but future costs could rise significantly.

Venice’s unique entry fee system has garnered more than five million euros this year alone. Following the conclusion of the paid season, the city reported over 650,000 paying day visitors.

Entry Fee Details

Typically, visitors were charged ten euros for entry. Next year, however, this fee may increase significantly. On peak days, the city administration is considering raising the fee to as much as 50 euros.

Booking Discounts and Regulations

Since April, day visitors were required to pay on 60 designated occasions. Those who booked at least three days in advance could enter for five euros. Long-term tourists are exempt from this fee, but they will be subject to a tax for overnight stays. For the remainder of this year, day visitors can enter the city without any fee.

The Regulation Since 2024

In light of mass tourism, Venice started charging entry fees in 2024. Contrary to expectations, visitor numbers have not declined. Officially, it remains a pilot program, yet few doubt that this regulation is permanent.

Record Earnings

This year’s earnings are projected to reach record levels, with precise figures expected to be published shortly. In 2025, earnings were 5.4 million euros, and 2.2 million euros the year before.

Future Fee Increases

Mayor Simone Venturini has already indicated that future entry fees could be significantly higher. The center-right politician proposed charging between 30 and 50 euros on specific dates. However, this would require approval from the Italian government, especially considering constitutional concerns.
