Google is revolutionizing the Android backup system, making it more user-friendly and flexible. However, users may soon find that their backed-up data consumes more storage space in their Google accounts.
With this update, Google is enhancing the Android backup feature by introducing new selection options. Users will now have the ability to choose specific apps for backup rather than being limited to backing up all or no app data.
Additionally, a new feature for backing up documents from the Downloads folder is now available. These files will be directly stored in Google Drive, which is particularly beneficial for important documents. Google is notifying users about this change through email communications.
Backup Data Counts Towards Google Account Storage Limits
Google has announced that in 45 days, additional backup data will count against Google account storage limits. This includes SMS messages, call logs, and device and app settings.
If storage limits are exceeded, automatic backups will be paused. Users must then free up space or upgrade their subscriptions.
Increased Backup Control
Google is also rolling out more granular controls for app backups. On devices running Android 9 or newer, users can specify which data types and individual apps should be backed up.
These changes will take effect 45 days after receiving the notification email. Already backed-up content can be removed from the cloud later if certain categories or apps are deselected.
Additionally, users can disable some pre-installed apps. It is advisable to limit backups and automatic media downloads in messenger apps, as well as to strategically manage downloads, photos, and videos from your devices.
WhatsApp users can directly manage large data volumes within the app folder using the “Manage Storage” feature. Older devices may allow the relocation of apps to SD cards. Users should avoid questionable cleaning apps that promise to free up space unreasonably.
