Over 20 percent of 23 to 25-year-olds in the UK already show signs of fatty liver, with nearly 3 percent developing liver fibrosis. In developing countries like Bangladesh, documented cases have increased almost sevenfold in a decade.
The Dangerous Link Between Liver and Heart
What connects these two vital organs? The central factors are insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. A fatty liver exacerbates oxidative stress and systemic inflammation, accelerating the process of atherosclerosis.
Chronic inflammation and oxidative processes burden the entire organism, leading to serious complications. A study by Mass General Brigham indicates that patients with fatty liver have a staggering 69 percent higher likelihood of experiencing severe heart problems due to an increased number of non-calcified plaques in their arteries.
Potential Protective Mechanisms
Researchers at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf have identified a potential protective mechanism involving the signaling molecule S1P, which might enhance the production of thrombomodulin in blood vessel walls. This could prevent the formation of blood clots without increasing the risk of bleeding. Higher levels of S1P were associated with lower coagulation activity in patient samples.
Emerging Medications on the Horizon
The pharmaceutical landscape is evolving rapidly. Following EU approval in mid-July 2026, an oral form of Semaglutide is expected to become available in Germany by September. In clinical studies, this medication has demonstrated a weight reduction of approximately 16 percent—a significant factor in relieving liver stress.

- Interleukin-11: Research published in Nature suggests that disabling this gene can help preserve muscle mass, reduce body fat, and extend lifespan.
- Neohesperidin: This compound found in bitter oranges and grapefruits regulates lipid metabolism and may alleviate fatty liver condition.
- Ellagic Acid: Present in berries and nuts, this compound offers protection against severe forms of steatohepatitis (NASH).
The Importance of Lifestyle Changes
Despite advancements in medication, lifestyle intervention remains the cornerstone of treatment. A weight loss of just 7 percent can significantly alleviate liver inflammation, while a reduction of 10 percent can measurably decrease the organ’s fat accumulation.
A US study has shown beneficial effects from daily avocado consumption. In adults with abdominal obesity, the concentration of harmful LDL particles dropped, equating to a statistically significant 4 percent reduced risk of heart disease. Additionally, the European Food Safety Authority recommends 3 grams of beta-glucan daily for lowering LDL cholesterol levels.
On the other hand, excessive consumption of fructose and refined carbohydrates is a leading cause of MASLD in non-alcoholics.
