Changes in Finnish Wine Preferences: A Summer Shift
Finnish drinkers are experiencing a transformation in their beverage choices this summer. The trend indicates that alcoholic beverages are no longer favored in the same way as before, and this shift reflects broader changes in Finnish drinking habits.
A Surge in Non-Alcoholic Sales
This summer, non-alcoholic products have seen a remarkable increase in sales at Alko, with figures rising nearly 60% compared to last summer. According to Matti Syrjä, Alko’s product communication manager, this is part of a global “megatrend” affecting consumption patterns.
“Alcohol is being consumed a bit more moderately,” Syrjä notes. While the change may not seem drastic compared to last year, it coincides with recent updates to store hours, including expanded Sunday hours. These adjustments render it difficult to predict how this summer’s sales will ultimately turn out.
Popular Choices: Riesling and Rosé
Despite the overall decline in wine sales, Finnish consumers still enjoy their summer favorites: Riesling and rosé wines. Although the sale of almost all wine varieties has decreased compared to previous summers, these two remain popular.
A Preference for Quality Over Quantity
Sales reports reveal surprising trends, particularly among white wines. Data indicates that wines described as “rich and toasted” have seen nearly a 40% increase in sales this year compared to last. This shift aligns with the notion of “less but better,” suggesting that consumers are opting for fewer bottles but choosing higher-quality selections.
As Syrjä explains, “We can conclude that a trend is emerging where people think about quality over quantity. This is particularly apparent in the preference for richer flavor profiles, which tend to be in the higher price range.”
Emerging Trends in Sparkling and Red Wines
Similar trends are noticeable in sparkling and red wines. Sparkling wines characterized as “complex and vibrant” and red wines described as “developed and sophisticated” have gained popularity, reflecting a movement toward mid-range, premium offerings.
Sales Insights from Alko
From April to June, Alko reported significant sales figures, with 5.6 million bottles of wine sold, translating to 10.0 million liters. The sales also included 2.2 million bottles of spirits and over a million bottles of beer. Interestingly, the least sold category was non-alcoholic beverages, though their sales have risen to 321,000 bottles.
Among wines, white wines maintained their status as the most consumed, followed closely by red wines, sparkling wines, and rosés. While July statistics are not yet available, recent reports suggest that mixed drinks and craft beers have been selling particularly well.
Conclusion: A Shift Towards Mindful Consumption
The ongoing trends in Finnish wine and beverage consumption illustrate a significant pivot towards more mindful drinking habits. As consumers seek higher-quality options and experiment with non-alcoholic alternatives, it’s clear that the landscape of summer celebrations in Finland is evolving. Whether it’s the refreshing taste of Riesling or the vibrant notes of a sparkling wine, this summer promises to showcase a variety of flavors and experiences for all.
