The new line includes four distinct series designed for different applications: Epyc 9006 SP7, Epyc 9006 SP8, Epyc 9006X with “3D V-Cache,” and the low-power Epyc 9006 LP. The initial shipment primarily targets the new Helios rack, with public availability expected in Q4 2026. The remainder of the series will launch progressively through 2027.
Venice Becomes AMD Epyc 9006
The newly announced Epyc 9006 CPUs, codenamed “Venice,” are engineered for exceptional performance. This series is divided into four categories, which are:
- AMD Epyc 9006 SP7 – Up to 256 cores
- AMD Epyc 9006 SP8 – Up to 128 cores
- AMD Epyc 9006X – Featuring 96 MB additional cache per CCD
- AMD Epyc 9006 LP – Low Power DDR support
Interestingly, the naming convention maintains the Epyc branding despite the architectural changes, indicating a subtler evolution in their architecture.
Zen 6c: A New Era of Multi-Core Performance
The new lineup utilizes the Zen-6 architecture, which brings several key distinctions:
- Zen 6c delivers up to 256 cores, while the classic Zen 6 offers a maximum of 96 cores.
- Both types of cores can be configured across different sockets.
- Helios will utilize Zen 6 classic cores running at 5 GHz.
This level of multi-core configuration is particularly advantageous for data-intensive applications, enhancing parallel processing capabilities.
Epyc 9996 SP7: A Core Monster
Among the new offerings, the Epyc 9996 SP7 stands out as a flagship processor boasting 256 cores and an impressive 1,024 MB L3 cache. The processor supports a memory bandwidth capable of 12,800 MT/s and includes several PCIe lanes for optimal connectivity.
SP8: Dual Core Configuration
The Epyc 9006 SP8 provides an alternative with a focus on lower power consumption, supporting both Zen 6 and Zen 6c cores on a single socket. While it offers fewer cores compared to the SP7, the design remains efficient, making it a suitable choice for smaller server environments.
Introducing Venice-X: Enhanced Core Architecture
The Venice-X processors are set to redefine cache configurations with 96 cores and up to 1,152 MB L3 cache per CPU. This increased cache is distributed efficiently among the cores, maintaining a balance between performance and storage capacity.
Verano: The Low-Power Option
Lastly, the Epyc 9006 LP, also known as Verano, targets environments requiring low power consumption without sacrificing performance, featuring up to 72 cores and support for LPDDR5X.
Manufacturer Benchmarks Indicate Significant Gains
AMD has also provided benchmarks showing substantial performance improvements over previous generations. The specs are promising, suggesting that with only 82 new Venice servers, companies could phase out 1,000 older Intel Xeon systems, demonstrating the efficiency and power of the new architecture.
Launch Timeline and Availability
While specific model details are still forthcoming, the Epyc 9006 series is expected to kick off in Q4 2026, with broader availability in 2027. This phased introduction will allow customers to progressively adopt the new technology as it becomes available.
