Enhanced Shutdown Procedure
The Tails maintainers have transitioned to the standard shutdown process used in GNOME. While this new method may take longer, it significantly reduces the risk of data loss. The shutdown dialogue now informs users when applications are still running or unsaved documents need attention. If no confirmation is provided, the system will proceed with shutdown after 60 seconds. This new feature is particularly important for users handling sensitive data, as it helps ensure that nothing is inadvertently lost during the shutdown process.
Importantly, the emergency shutdown feature remains unaffected. Users can still force the shutdown by ejecting the DVD or removing the USB stick, from which Tails is launched. However, the developers caution that this action may damage the persistent storage and lead to data loss.
Introduction of Celluloid as the New Video Player
In a notable change, the previous video player, Gnome Videos, has been replaced by “Celluloid,” a more modern and reliable option. This switch not only enhances user experience but also comes with additional security benefits, as Celluloid does not have network access. For users looking to watch online videos, especially in formats like MP4 and AVI, the Tor Browser is recommended for safe browsing. For streaming services utilizing IPTV and HLS URLs, VLC can be used, though users will need to install this as additional software.
It is crucial to note that Celluloid does not run on older computers manufactured in 2011 or earlier; in such cases, VLC will serve as the replacement video player. These changes are complemented by routine updates to core modules, including the Tor Browser, which is now at version 15.0.19, along with various firmware updates that improve support for newer hardware, such as WLAN dongles and graphics cards.
Current Versions and Accessibility
The Tails 7.10 version is readily available as a USB-stick image. Additionally, users can find an ISO file for burning to DVD or for use in virtual machines.
The preceding version, Tails 7.9, was released in June and primarily focused on software maintenance of core components, including important updates to the Tor Browser and new firmware packages.
