Microsoft has released an unscheduled update for Windows 11, identified as KB5121767. This update replaces the previous July update, KB5101650, on select Dell systems due to issues like overheating, unexpected shutdowns, performance drops, boot problems, and increased battery drain. According to Microsoft, this update is intended specifically for affected devices.
Recommended Only for Specific Dell Systems
Users are advised not to manually search for this update unless they experience the issues mentioned above. In Microsoft’s support documentation, the company states, “This out-of-band update is only recommended for devices affected by this issue. If your device is not affected, you do not need to take any action.”

The Update May Appear on Other PCs
Despite the restrictions, KB5121767 may also automatically appear on other Windows 11 PCs. This occurs if the option for early access to new updates is activated in the Windows Update settings. In such cases, the update may be automatically downloaded and installed after a restart, even if the system is not listed among the affected devices.
Causes of the Issues
The issues were triggered by the July security update, KB5101650. Initial findings suggest that certain Dell systems using the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver experienced incompatibilities. This driver is responsible for managing power, temperature control, and fan management. Changes to the new Windows USB-C management interface apparently disrupted this collaboration, resulting in performance drops, overheating, and unexpected restarts.
Stopping the Previous Update Distribution
Microsoft has ceased the distribution of KB5101650 for the affected Dell PCs. Going forward, KB5121767 will be installed on these devices instead. For all other systems, Microsoft states that no action is necessary.
