A bed race will also be held at the international horse event ‘North-Holland Horse Trials’ in Oudkarspel this weekend. This race has been renamed the Bed Cross, and is not on asphalt but off-road through the meadow between the obstacles. “It is very tough”, Gerjo Boos admits to NH Nieuws after his first training on the course.
Bed racing is a well-known phenomenon in the north of the province, but the bed cross variant is brand new. Riding school Beukers will close its big one this Sunday equestrian event in a playful way.
“We have this entire site and all the equipment for the entire weekend at our disposal. It would be a shame if we didn’t do anything with it from Sunday afternoon,” says Micha Baron, organizer of North-Holland Horse Trials.

Manege Beukers organizes the bed cross with the help of Bed special, organizer and promoter of the bed race sport. “We presented our idea to them and they were immediately enthusiastic,” says Micha.
“The wheels have been adjusted,” explains Gerjo Boos. In addition to being a participant, he is also the technical man of Bedspecial. “Normally we use the wheels of a racing bike, now we have put wider tires on it.”
“What are those people doing with those beds in the meadow?”
This Easter Sunday, the bed crossers will start at 2 p.m. in a half-hour race. It’s about who completes the most rounds. “This is going to be heavy because you can normally rest on the bed for a while; that is not possible with this surface,” says Gerjo.
The course slaloms between the obstacles and over hills. “The public who is not from the neighborhood will probably wonder: ‘what are those people doing with the beds in the meadow?'”, laughs Micha.
