Bethesda Game Studios has finally opened up about their future projects in a comprehensive announcement. The studio has confirmed numerous titles within the Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Starfield franchises, some of which have been rumored for quite a while.
Fallout 5, Obsidian’s New Fallout, and Remasters
Fallout 5 is positioned as a long-term goal for the series and is currently in pre-production. However, fans shouldn’t expect the next major installment to hit the shelves anytime soon. To maintain engagement, Bethesda is collaborating again with Obsidian Entertainment, the developers behind Fallout: New Vegas. While they haven’t disclosed specific names or details, a sequel to New Vegas seems plausible.
Furthermore, both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas will receive official remasters. These remakes are reportedly in development at Bethesda, although details surrounding the development teams and release timelines remain undisclosed. It is uncertain if Bethesda will adopt a similar approach to the remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, or if they will simply focus on technical adjustments such as higher resolutions and better performance.
On top of that, Fallout 76 is receiving a significant update titled Raven Rock next year, acting as a prequel to Fallout 3. The location, Raven Rock, will be reminiscent of its role in the original game as an Enclave stronghold.
The Elder Scrolls 6: The Main Project
The Elder Scrolls 6 has moved to the forefront of development. As the sequel to Skyrim, it has become the studio’s primary focus, with most of the team actively working on it. Bethesda has indicated satisfaction with the current state of development, and internal testing is reportedly ongoing.
In addition, Bethesda Game Studios and Zenimax Online Studios are strengthening their collaboration. Zenimax, responsible for The Elder Scrolls Online, will have increased involvement with the overall franchise, which promises continued support for new content.
Creation Engine 3 and Starfield
The latest developments in Bethesda’s game engine, Creation Engine 3, will serve as the technical foundation for their future RPGs. This engine aims to support multiple simultaneous projects and enhance internal tools, systems, and player experiences.
Starfield remains a significant aspect of Bethesda’s long-term plans as well. The studio has reported over 17 million players have engaged with this space RPG, collectively reaching nearly one billion gameplay hours.
As it enters its third year, Bethesda is set to introduce new stories, gameplay improvements, and additional updates for Starfield. Upcoming Starborn content remains a mystery—whether it will manifest as a classic expansion or smaller content fragments is yet to be revealed.
Final Thoughts
As a dedicated Fallout fan, the avalanche of announcements is exhilarating, albeit accompanied by a sense of cautious optimism. The remaster of New Vegas is a dream come true, yet recent experiences with titles like Starfield and Fallout 76 raise concerns regarding the quality of new projects. With the remasters, I sincerely hope they remain true to their roots, avoiding the pitfalls of total remakes. However, I have high hopes for the collaboration with Obsidian; perhaps a New Vegas 2 might even see the return of beloved characters like Lanius.
