GTA 6 is set to release in November exclusively for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. An ex-Rockstar producer reveals why the PC version is taking so long to arrive.
No PC release when GTA 6 launches in November. Currently, the game is only announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. An ex-Rockstar producer has shed light on the issue, clarifying that it’s not a matter of punishing PC gamers.
Understanding the Console-First Approach
John Ricchio, who has worked at Rockstar on titles such as Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, and GTA 5, explained on the Kiwi Talkz podcast why Rockstar develops its major games primarily for consoles first, with the PC port following later.
A Managed Development Process
Ricchio articulates that starting with consoles provides defined technical limitations that streamline the design process. By establishing these boundaries upfront, developers can avoid the challenges of retrofitting a game for a platform with variable capabilities. Historically, Rockstar developed PC versions first, only to face significant complications later on.
He emphasizes that it is vastly more challenging to enhance the performance of a game after it has been completed than to simplify it from the start. When additional power becomes available, game developers can upscale components or improve visuals, making things easier.
Lessons from Red Dead Redemption
Ricchio references the PC version of Red Dead Redemption, which launched in 2024, fourteen years after the original release. While an internal PC version existed early on, developers opted to concentrate efforts on GTA 5, culminating in a delayed PC version.
He argues that such decisions are a typical part of the business landscape in gaming. A port must justify its resources, either by being profitable or technically feasible enough to transition with minimal effort—a scenario that is seldom encountered.
The Current Console Landscape
With the contemporary console generation, Ricchio expresses a degree of optimism. The architectures of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are more aligned than in previous generations, simplifying the porting process.
When Can We Expect the PC Version?
As for when the PC version of GTA 6 might arrive, both Take-Two and Rockstar have yet to provide a statement. What is clear is that the initial release on November 19 will solely cater to console players, and pre-orders for GTA 6 are already underway.
