Phone fraud is becoming increasingly aggressive for many people in Germany. No longer limited to anonymous recorded messages or blatant prize schemes, today’s calls often appear surprisingly credible at first glance. This is where the danger lies, as callers who already know names, addresses, or even old account details are more likely trying to coerce trust rather than offer legitimate assistance.

Significant Increase in Phone Fraud

According to a recent press release by Clever Dialer, June 2026 saw a staggering 626,555 cases of phone fraud reported—a 19.5% increase from the previous month. The so-called ‘spam pressure’ also rose, with an average of 5.67 unwanted calls reported per user. Criminals posing as consumer protection agencies, data protection offices, bank employees, or energy providers were particularly prevalent, usually with the same goal: to extract personal information, sensitive data, or create a sense of urgency among victims.

It’s particularly alarming that many victims note that the callers already had personal details. One reported instance involved a caller who knew the full name, date of birth, and address from twelve years ago. The caller then attempted to obtain the IBAN under the guise of a data verification process. Such moments are precisely when the call should be terminated immediately. Legitimate banks, authorities, and energy providers will never ask for immediate confirmation of complete account or personal details over the phone.

Changing Numbers to Bypass Blocks

In June, a notable increase was observed in a block of numbers from Düsseldorf starting with the area code 0211. According to Clever Dialer, 49,540 calls from the block +4921195588XXX were recorded across 38 different numbers. Additional suspicious blocks originated from Dornhan and Mönchengladbach. This tactic, often referred to as “number cycling,” involves changing the last digits of a phone number so that blocked numbers can be quickly replaced and thus, the campaign remains undetected for longer.

The Most Reported Frauds

The patterns of these scams vary, but they generally follow a similar strategy. Sometimes it’s about a supposed prize subscription that would otherwise cost hundreds of euros, while at other times, a meter number is requested. In some cases, the callers claim to be bank employees asserting that there have been hacker attacks from abroad. One victim explained that the caller knew his name, address, date of birth, and account number and offered a “one-time chance” to stop fraudulent calls in the future. If you find yourself under pressure to confirm any information or respond with “yes,” you should hang up the call immediately.

Familiar Information is Not a Validation of Credibility

The fact that criminals can mention personal data does not imply that they are genuinely from a bank, authority, or provider. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) cautions against this well-known method of fraud called spoofing, where criminals impersonate legitimate institutions to directly obtain sensitive data or prepare for further attacks.

Thus, you should never disclose your IBAN, meter number, contract details, or one-time codes over the phone. If you feel uncertain during a call, it’s best to terminate it and reach out to the institution using a verified official number. The Federal Network Agency also accepts complaints regarding unauthorized calls and misuse of phone numbers. The more detailed you are in documenting the time, number, conversation content, and any demands made, the better you can assess suspicious numbers.

In conclusion, staying vigilant and informed is your best defense against phone fraud. Always trust your instincts and never feel compelled to provide personal details over the phone. Seeking verification through official channels is crucial in protecting yourself from these deceptive schemes.
