The US military has reportedly launched new attacks on Iran following an assault by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has declared the waterway closed.
Just after new negotiation efforts in the US-Iran conflict, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has escalated once more. The US military has initiated strikes against targets in Iran, following an attack by the Iranian Navy on a container ship.
Background of the Conflict
The attacks are reportedly a response to an assault by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on a container ship flying the Cypriot flag in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the US Central Command, a crew member from the ship is missing, and the vessel is unable to continue its journey due to severe damage and a fire on board.
Iran’s Response: Closing the Strait
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz is “closed until further notice.” They fired warning shots at a ship navigating an “unauthorized route,” which was halted and subsequently attacked. The Iranian government has declared that no ships will pass through the Strait until American interventions in the region come to an end.
Escalation of Hostilities
This marks the third round of US attacks on Iran within a single week. Following a framework agreement between Washington and Tehran last month, a temporary calm had settled in the region. However, massive attacks resumed early Wednesday after President Trump declared the agreed ceasefire over, prompting Iranian forces to retaliate against US bases in the area.
Recent Diplomatic Efforts
On Saturday, Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi met with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghtschi to discuss the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state television reported that they exchanged views on “suitable mechanisms to ensure the safe passage of ships.” It remains uncertain whether these discussions will continue following the recent escalation.
