AUDIO: Wimbledon: Fery begeistert gefeiert – Zverev muss warten (1 Min)
Two-Set Lead
Current Status: July 7, 2026, 08:30 AM
Tennis professional Alexander Zverev has to wait to complete his match in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon against Czech player Jiri Lehecka, interrupted just before 11 PM London time with Zverev leading 6-4, 7-5, 3-3.
The interruption was expected as the German player entered the Center Court nearly two hours prior to this point. Delays from earlier matches—especially the five-set thriller featuring local hero Artur Fery, who triumphed against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov—led to the late stoppage.
The match was paused in the middle of the third set due to the curfew regulations. It is scheduled to resume this afternoon, not before 2:30 PM local time.
Zverev Shows Nerve Under Pressure
Until the interruption, Zverev, who has never before progressed beyond the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, demonstrated impressive composure. After a shaky start, where he faced three break points against him, he recovered well, securing Lehecka’s fifth service game at 5-4, ultimately securing the first set.
The trend continued in the second set, where Zverev again showcased resilience by saving two break points. In the sixth service game, he capitalized on his opponent’s errors to seize a break point and subsequently avoid a tie-break with a solid service game.
At 10:30 PM local time, the third set commenced, and Zverev utilized every moment until the curfew, again facing two break points but successfully holding serve to tie at 3-3 when the match was suspended.
Fearful Opponent: Taylor Fritz Awaits
In a possible quarter-final matchup, Zverev will face Taylor Fritz, the American world number seven. Fritz easily dispatched Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in just 1 hour and 38 minutes, winning 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-3.
Fritz is considered a tough opponent for Zverev, having conquered him in their last seven encounters, including in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2024 and most recently in the semi-finals in Halle, Germany.
