The Ukraine has developed a new weapon that may pose significant challenges for Russia, as it comes from above – very high above.

The Ukrainian army has repeatedly found innovative and creative solutions over the past few years to defend itself against aggressive Russian actions. This effort is not only about defense; Ukraine is also launching attacks on Russia with modern weapons and sophisticated tactics. Consequently, during a Ukrainian offensive involving deep strikes into Russia, pressure was increased on leader Vladimir Putin.
One unconventional method employed by the Ukrainian military to overcome Russian defenses involved attaching drones and missiles to stratospheric balloons, also known as weather balloons. Specifically for this tactic, a new weapon has been developed.
Ukraine’s Dart Missile: Overcoming Russian Defense with Balloons
The Center of Innovative Technologies Program unveiled the “Dart” missile in June, designed specifically for launch from weather balloons. According to the manufacturer, the Dart is transported by a weather balloon to an altitude of 12 to 18 kilometers before being released. According to the specialist portal Militarnyi, the Dart missile uses a navigation system for guidance up to six kilometers altitude.
After this, the navigation system is disabled, and a solid fuel engine provides the critical thrust towards a selected target. This feature makes Dart missiles resistant to Russian jamming systems in their final phase, which is what sets them apart.
The cruise missile itself is just 1.84 meters long and weighs 13 kilograms, yet can carry warheads of up to ten kilograms. Interestingly, these warheads contain graphite fibers, a form of carbon we all recognize from pencils.
This conductivity makes the Dart missile’s warhead ideally suited for incapacitating power grids.
Ukrainian Kamikaze Drones: The Hornet
The Dart missile is expected to receive official approval from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense soon. Moreover, the Center of Innovative Technologies Program has announced plans for additional Dart variants, including a ballistic missile that can also be launched from balloons.
According to the specialist portal “Defence Network,” the balloon technology poses a considerable challenge for Russian defense systems, as costly missiles would be required to neutralize these high-altitude threats.
Currently, the Ukrainian military is also launching drones and missiles via balloons that were not originally designed for such deployment. For instance, the company Kettletech Labs shared a video in April featuring Ukrainian Hornet drones being launched from a stratospheric balloon. The company’s AI drone, Swift Beat, has become one of Ukraine’s essential tools against Russia in recent months.
Launching from a balloon increases the range significantly. Furthermore, according to sources like Standard, the AI-equipped drones do not require a connection to Ukraine, rendering them immune to Russian jamming signals.
Another significant advantage of the balloon method is its cost-effectiveness, providing considerable advantages to Ukraine without incurring substantial expenses.
