The new air conditioning systems tested by Stiftung Warentest can do much more than just cool.
Modern air conditioners are no longer mere power guzzlers that only provide relief during hot summer days. A recent test by Stiftung Warentest clearly demonstrates that these devices are true all-rounders, showcasing their strengths particularly during the heating season. When used correctly, they can significantly reduce heating costs and are more environmentally friendly than conventional gas heating systems. Moreover, they reliably cool the air in summer.
Top Performers: Mitsubishi and Samsung
Leading the test is Mitsubishi Electric’s model (indoor unit: MSZ-RZ25VU, outdoor unit: MUZ-RZ25VUHZ) priced at around 1,660 euros. It impressed the testers with superior performance in both cooling and heating. A key advantage is its use of refrigerant: it operates with eco-friendly propane (R290), which boasts a significantly better climate balance than the soon-to-be-banned R32 refrigerant still found in many other systems.
It doesn’t always have to be the most expensive device, as shown by Samsung’s price tip (indoor unit: AR70F09CAAWN, outdoor unit: AR70F09CAAWX) at around 1,300 euros. It ranks just behind the test winner overall, shining especially in terms of its efficiency during heating. According to Stiftung Warentest, this model incurs the lowest electricity costs, resulting in significant savings.
Stiftung Warentest examined a total of eleven single-split units and one multi-split system for multiple rooms. The complete results and a detailed breakdown of all the strengths and weaknesses of the tested models can be found in the corresponding issue of the magazine or online (view it at Stiftung Warentest).
Key Considerations Before Purchase
Experts from Stiftung Warentest offer clear recommendations to ensure your investment is worthwhile. First and foremost: installation is not a job for DIY enthusiasts. Split air conditioning units must be installed by certified professionals with appropriate credentials for safety and efficiency reasons. It is crucial to obtain multiple comprehensive quotes, as installation costs can significantly impact the total price and can vary widely.
When selecting a device, pay conscious attention to the refrigerant used. Models utilizing natural refrigerants like propane (R290) are a future-proof choice, as the widely-used R32 will gradually be banned by the EU due to its climate-damaging effects. To fully exploit the potential for savings, you should view the system as an all-year-round solution and consistently use it for heating in winter. Only then will it truly relieve your heating cost burden and benefit the environment.
