The End of an Era: Panini Restaurant Closes Its Doors
Panini, a beloved Italian restaurant located in Turku, is set to close its doors on August 22, marking the end of nearly three decades of service. The establishment, renowned for its pizzas, pastas, and paninis, has become a staple in the heart of Turku, particularly at Vähätori.
A History Rich in Flavor
Established in 1997, Panini has been a culinary cornerstone for 29 years, serving a diverse clientele with its delicious Italian fare. Over the years, the restaurant has witnessed the ebb and flow of economic trends, including the challenging times brought on by the recent pandemic. “Every story has its ending, and now it’s time for Panini’s story to conclude,” noted Janne Juvonen, the CEO of VoiVeljet, the parent company, in a recent statement.
Challenges and Changes
VoiVeljet’s marketing manager, Sini Hallisto, spoke to the media about the significant shifts in dining habits that have influenced the decision to close. “The world has changed, especially when it comes to lunch. Despite the quality of our food and positive feedback, we decided it was time to close the doors,” Hallisto elaborated.
A Fond Farewell to Customers
In an effort to commemorate its legacy, Panini will feature special “All Time Favourites” dishes starting July 10, showcasing some of the restaurant’s most cherished offerings from its early days. Additionally, during the summer, customers are encouraged to share their memorable experiences and stories related to Panini, making this a nostalgic farewell for long-time patrons.
The Founders’ Reflections
Panini was originally founded by Mika Lövgren and Janne Suvanto. In 2008, the restaurant became part of the VoiVeljet family, now including other partners such as Mikko Leminen. Lövgren expressed mixed feelings about the closure, stating, “It’s bittersweet. Like a child moving out, Panini has grown up; it’s time to venture into new horizons.”
Future of VoiVeljet
While Panini may be closing its doors, its staff will continue to be employed at other VoiVeljet establishments across Turku, which has expanded to a total of eight restaurants, along with Amos Krog located in Kemiönsaari. Currently, there are no immediate plans for the future use of Panini’s physical space, as the focus remains on a respectful and fitting conclusion to its storied history.
Conclusion: Cherishing Memories
As the countdown to the closing date begins, Panini prepares to bid farewell to its devoted customers and the Turku community that has supported it throughout the years. The restaurant not only served food but also created countless memories for its patrons. The legacy of Panini will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who enjoyed its warm ambiance and delectable offerings.
