As rumors swirl around Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18, one of the most notable changes appears to be a reduction in memory. Despite earlier expectations that the device would be equipped with 12GB of RAM to maximize the functionality of iOS 27, reports indicate that Apple is set to include only 9GB of RAM in standard models.

Chip Configuration Changes

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple will be transitioning to new 1.5GB chips, previously utilized in Pro models. Interestingly, the iPhone 18 will utilize just six of these chips instead of eight, resulting in the 9GB of RAM configuration. This move stands in contrast to the A20 Pro model in the anticipated “iPhone Fold” and other Pro versions, which will retain the 12GB memory setup.

This decision may perplex customers, particularly those hoping for enhanced performance and multi-tasking capabilities that higher RAM allows. Initially, there were expectations that the base model would receive RAM configurations aligned with current Pro and Air models.

Impact of Memory Prices

The reason for this shift seems to correlate closely with the ongoing memory crisis affecting the tech industry. Apple recently raised prices for its MacBooks and iPads, possibly in anticipation of further increases. By limiting the RAM in the iPhone 18, Apple may be attempting to keep the retail price under control, ultimately protecting its profit margins.

Despite the reduction in RAM, it is expected that consumers may still face higher prices for the iPhone 18, with projections suggesting that models like the iPhone 18 Pro could begin at around €1,500.

Affected Features

Currently, it appears that only a limited number of features will be impacted by this reduced RAM capacity. These include certain functionalities associated with local execution of Apple Intelligence, such as new dictation capabilities and more natural-sounding voices for Siri. However, the scope of affected features could expand as more functionalities hinge on these advancements in artificial intelligence.

While it remains uncertain whether the new Siri will be available immediately upon the iPhone 18’s launch, it is likely that the device will not support these features if they are rolled out in the upcoming year. The iPhone 18 is expected to make its debut in fall next year alongside an innovative foldable model and newer Pro iPhones.
