Google has recently permitted users to change their actual Gmail address for the first time. Previously, users could only change the displayed name (e.g., “Max Muster”), but not the part before the ‘@’ symbol. This feature, initially launched in the USA, is now gradually being rolled out worldwide, including Germany.

The Old Gmail Address Remains Functional

According to a Google support entry, changing the email address is straightforward. The previous email address will still be available as an alternative. Existing contact lists and associated accounts will continue to function without issues. However, users will need to log in with their original email address for most services linked to their Google account. Notably, Google’s own services, like YouTube, will accept the new email address.

Key Points to Consider

It’s important to note that the new email addresses must be available. This can often be a challenge, as many Gmail addresses are already taken. Users can revert to their old email address whenever they choose or continue using it. However, deleting the old address remains impossible. To permanently dispose of a Gmail address, users must delete their entire account—a step many are hesitant to take.

Limitations on Number of New Addresses

Google imposes limits on the number of new email addresses users can create. In total, users can set up three alternative email names. However, they can only do this once per year, meaning they can’t activate three alternatives at once. If done over the years, users could create up to four different email addresses linked to their Google account. Google also highlights the possibility of linking external email accounts with the Google account.

Additional Steps for Chromebook Users

For Chromebook owners, changing the email address involves extra steps. Google advises removing the old account from the device before manually adding the new one. Failing to do this may prevent the Chromebook from updating the account information. Users should also back up their local data beforehand.

Creating New Gmail Addresses without Changing Your Account

For those who want to create new Gmail addresses without modifying their current account, there are various tricks available. These methods allow for flexibility without the need for the cumbersome process of changing accounts.
