After a long wait, FSR Upscaling 4.1 is finally available for RDNA 3 graphics cards. ComputerBase examines image quality and compares it with RDNA 4. Additionally, the article features benchmarks of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, RX 7800 XT, and RX 7600 against FSR Upscaling 3.1.

FSR Upscaling 4.1 on RDNA 3 with an Early Launch

The arrival of FSR Upscaling 4.1 has been a struggle. Initially, the significantly improved FSR 4.0 was only available for the RDNA 4 generation. AMD left its intentions for older graphics cards ambiguous, leading most to believe that an upgrade was unlikely. However, persistent demands from Radeon owners prompted AMD to announce unexpectedly that RDNA 3 would be receiving FSR Upscaling 4.1 in July, followed by RDNA 2 in early 2027.

Adrenalin 26.6.2 Brings FSR Upscaling 4.1 for RDNA 3

Although it is not yet July, AMD has unlocked FSR Upscaling 4.1 for RDNA 3 with the Adrenalin 26.6.2 driver. This update applies exclusively to discrete RDNA 3 GPUs, such as the Radeon RX 7000 series desktop graphics cards. Integrated GPUs based on RDNA 3.5 require more time to implement due to their limited computational power, necessitating a simpler “lightweight” neural network.

Speaking of neural networks, AMD had to adapt the one used for RDNA 3 as FSR 4.1 primarily utilizes the FP8 data format, which RDNA 4 fully supports. For RDNA 3, however, an INT8 version is employed, which AMD claims offers comparable image quality to its FP8 counterpart. Compared to an INT8 version leaked last year that suffered from visible graphic artifacts, this official version shows significant improvements.

FSR 4.1 Benchmarks with RX 7900 XTX, RX 7800 XT, and RX 7600

To evaluate the performance of FSR Upscaling 4.1 on RDNA 3, ComputerBase conducts various benchmarks across nine games. The tests will feature the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7800 XT, comparing FSR Upscaling 4.1 with the older FSR 3.1. Furthermore, additional test sets will include the Radeon RX 7600, providing a comprehensive overview of how the new technology performs across different graphics cards.

Stay tuned for a detailed analysis of image quality and performance metrics, as we dive deeper into the capabilities of FSR 4.1 and what it means for gamers using RDNA 3 hardware against previous versions.
