Kanye West is scheduled to perform in San Antonio on July 4th, but Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones calls for cancellation.
Kanye West is facing growing opposition ahead of his planned concert in San Antonio. The mayor of the Texas city, Gina Ortiz Jones, has publicly spoken out in favor of canceling the event. The concert is scheduled to take place on July 4th at the Alamodome, a city-funded arena.
In a post on Platform X, Jones said San Antonio should not provide a platform for anyone with a history of anti-Semitic comments. She is particularly critical of the planned date on American Independence Day, which falls in the year in which the USA celebrates its 250th anniversary.
More cancellations on West’s tour
Several of Ye’s gigs have already been canceled in various countries in the past few weeks and months. Most recently, Kanye West’s performances announced for the London Wireless Festival were canceled. It was previously known that he had been refused entry to Great Britain. The decision also sparked political reactions: Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the move and referred to his government’s stance in the fight against anti-Semitism. A planned gig in Switzerland also failed. FC Basel confirmed that it did not want to pursue a concert project in St. Jakob-Park after examining it, citing its own values as the reason.
Plus: In Poland, a concert planned for June at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów was canceled. The operators cited formal and legal reasons. The Polish Minister of Culture Marta Cienkowska had previously strongly criticized the plans and referred to Kanye West’s previous anti-Semitic statements. An announced appearance in Marseille, France, was also postponed. According to Ye, the concert will not take place “until further notice.”
Anti-Semitic statements and apology
The rapper, who currently performs under the name Ye, has made anti-Semitic comments several times in the past and described himself as a Nazi and fan of Adolf Hitler. He even released a song called “H**l Hitler”. At the beginning of the year he apologized for his statements and actions and attributed them to his bipolar disorder.
