Motocross rider Jeffrey Herlings has won the Italian Grand Prix in the MXGP. The 31-year-old driver from Oploo won the first round on the circuit in Montevarchi and finished second in the second round behind the Slovenian Tim Gajser.

In the GP results, Herlings stayed ahead of the Belgian classification leader Lucas Coenen and thus caught up in the world championship. Herlings scored 47 points and Coenen 40 points.

The Belgian leads the World Cup rankings with 449 points, 56 points more than Herlings. There have been nine of the nineteen race weekends.

“I tried in the second moto, hit a lot of stones and at one point I settled for second place, I knew that would give me the victory of the day,” Herlings told NOS.

‘Most dangerous job ever’
The win in the first moto, in which Herlings took the lead right from the start, was his first moto win in almost a month and his fifth moto win of the season.

It was tough, Herlings said afterwards. “This is the most dangerous track I’ve ever been on, with the rocks and the dust.”
