Matthijs van Nieuwkerk causes irritation with a question about his new program on SBS 6. According to reporter Janine Schuinder, he is an ungrateful guy. “This is just not fun.”

After four years, Matthijs van Nieuwkerk is finally making his TV comeback. Together with Shirma Rouse, he will create a travel series for SBS 6 with soul legend Aretha Franklin as the common thread. Critics like Tina Nijkamp think it is a mismatch: Matthijs comes from the canal belt, while SBS 6 has traditionally been seen as a camping channel.

‘I don’t care’

When Matthijs is a guest of Edwin Evers, the radio DJ tells him that he is moving from VARA to the camping channel. “Yes, I have to be honest with you, Edwin: I just feel like making this. It doesn’t really matter to me,” he responds to Radio 538.

He continues: “I just want to make a good program and I have a lot of confidence in the people with whom we will do this. Again: in an editing room with a director, this will really be something. I’m looking forward to this journey and I don’t really care about the sender.”

TV sequel?

Is Matthijs secretly working on a sequel to his TV career, but at SBS 6? “No, not at all. This just came my way. I didn’t pursue this myself or anything. It fell into my lap and I thought it was a great idea. That’s all it is. C’est all.”

Show newsreporter Janine Schuinder is dissatisfied. “I think it’s a bit ungrateful of him. SBS 6 facilitates that whole journey, he gets to make that great program, which is of course really cool. It’s his comeback, they give him the confidence and then he says: ‘I don’t really care where it is broadcast.’”

Welcome basket

Telegraaf reporter Jordi Versteegden says in the show section that he does not find Matthijs sympathetic. “We wanted to drop by as Shownieuws today with a nice welcome basket from Talpa, to say hello, but he wasn’t looking forward to that.”

Perhaps we should all wait and see about this program, counters presenter Dyantha Brooks. “Maybe the love for SBS will grow then.”
