Winger Cole Campbell, who was loaned to Hoffenheim from Borussia Dortmund last semester, has no future in Kraichgau. TSG confirmed on Tuesday that they would not be taking up the purchase option of a rumored amount of 7.5 million euros, which was anchored in the loan deal with Westphalia. The 20-year-old American played six times for Sinsheim in the Bundesliga in the second half of the season and his contract with BVB is valid until 2028. Meanwhile, the intentions of the Black and Yellows are clear.
In the summer of 2022, Dortmund brought Campbell from the U19 team at Breidablik Kopavogur in Iceland, where he had made his debut in the first division at the age of 15. In Germany, the path initially led through the U17 and U19 of the Black and Yellows before Nuri Şahin used him for the first time with the professionals in October 2024. Since the debut, however, there have only been six more short appearances. Through Hoffenheim, the youngster wanted to boost his career with regular playing time at the highest level and increase his chance of taking part in the World Cup – but the plan failed.
Black and yellow doesn’t seem to be Campbell’s future either; a move abroad is considered more realistic. Bröndby IF and FC Midtjylland from Denmark are said to have been interested in the services of the offensive player as early as winter, whose market value shot up to 5 million euros last autumn and has remained at this level since then despite only 90 Bundesliga minutes and zero scorers. One reason for this: the market for Campbell is still there. According to Sky, Scottish champions Celtic Glasgow have put out feelers for the striker and want to make him one of their first summer purchases. Initial discussions between the parties are said to have already taken place.
Update June 19, 6:32 p.m.: According to the “Ruhr Nachrichten”, BVB wants to sell Campbell, but will continue to follow his development because they would like to sell him if possible with a buyback option or at least a resale share. There are many things that point to a transfer in the coming weeks. There should be interest from the Bundesliga, 2nd League, Austria and the Netherlands. The trail to Celtic is currently proving to be much cooler despite contacts and discussions. It is said that Campbell would prefer to stay in the Germany area.
