Many people in Germany save money – especially on clothing and when visiting restaurants, cafés and bars. This is shown by a representative survey by the Kantar Institute on behalf of the price comparison portal Idealo. More than 2,000 people between the ages of 18 and 64 were surveyed online.
When it comes to consumer goods, respondents most often save on clothing and accessories (52 percent), hobby and leisure supplies (42 percent), electronics (41 percent) and home and household items (36 percent). Reluctance is less pronounced when it comes to health (16 percent), books and media, drugstores and cosmetics (31 percent each) and food (32 percent). Multiple entries were possible.
Savings are also made on leisure expenses: in addition to gastronomy (52 percent), this particularly affects cinema (46 percent), concerts and festivals as well as clubs and nightlife (45 percent each). Theaters and cabarets (39 percent), exhibitions and museums (38 percent) as well as sports activities such as the gym and yoga courses (36 percent) are slightly less affected.
More than one in three people save for retirement
According to the survey, people most often save for vacations and trips or to build up financial reserves (41 percent each). Many put money aside for retirement provision (37 percent) or for larger purchases such as bicycles or televisions (27 percent).
Consumers save in different ways: 62 percent compare more prices from different providers. 56 percent pay more attention to special offers and discounted goods. 48 percent use discount coupons, 44 percent buy more no-name or own brands. 41 percent use products longer.
