As one of the host countries of this World Cup, Canada has achieved a major victory over the previous organizer Qatar. The match on the night from Thursday to Friday in Vancouver ended 6-0 and that meant the first victory ever for Canada at a World Cup. The goals came from Cyke Larin, Jonathan David (3x), Nathan Saliba and there was an own goal from Qatar. Thanks to his three goals, David is now joint top scorer of the tournament together with Lionel Messi.
Qatar finished the match with nine men after red cards for Homam Ahmed in the first half and for Assim Madibo at the start of the second half. Madibo’s serious foul on Canadian Ismaël Koné caused a moment of great shock. Koné lay quietly on the field for several minutes, surrounded by teammates and doctors, before being carried off the field on a stretcher. After the match it turned out that he had broken a leg.
With the big victory, Canada is almost certain of the next round. That would be the first time, because during the previous participations in 1986 and 2022, the Canadians stranded without points in the group stage. If Canada draws or wins in the final group match against Switzerland, they will even become group winners and can continue the tournament in their own country.
National coach Jesse Marsch was full of praise for his team afterwards and would have liked many more Canadians to be present at the match: “Four million Canadians will soon claim that they were in the stadium today, but the 55,000 people who were here were lucky.”
