Lina Kimmich once provided rare insights into her relationship life with her husband. The national player himself also had his say – and became emotional.

Today Joshua Kimmich meets with his teammates from the national team in Herzogenaurach. This is how preparations for the 2026 World Cup begin. For Kimmich and Co., the summer break will be shortened this year: the full focus is on the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The 34-year-old has not yet revealed whether his wife Lina and their four children will be traveling across the Atlantic with him. In the past, however, she was one of the players’ wives who supported the DFB stars on site at all tournaments.

The Kimmichs’ bumpy love story

The love between the two began unusually. As Lina Kimmich revealed in a TV documentary released in 2024, it wasn’t love at first sight. She was attracted to his humor, but she initially didn’t believe in a long-term relationship. The couple is now married and has four children – with this family balance, Joshua Kimmich even leads an internal national team ranking.

The two met more than twelve years ago. At the time, he was a 19-year-old playing for RB Leipzig and she was working in the club’s office. In the ZDF report “Joshua Kimmich – Leader and Driver” Lina Kimmich remembered getting to know each other: “It wasn’t love at first sight. We met, we got along well. We laughed together.” She emphasized: “I maintain: It was only because he made me laugh that I got involved with him back then.”

However, she probably never dreamed that it would result in a family of six. “At the beginning, of course, we thought it wouldn’t last long.” Because it was unclear how and, above all, where he would continue after Leipzig. “I thought: OK, he still has one year left on his contract, I don’t know where he’ll go after that.”

The destination was Munich – and she went with him for his sake. For Joshua Kimmich, it was an absolute proof of love: “She was ready to move to Munich because of me,” he enthused.
