The first flex homes have now been built. In addition to houses, there will be schools, shops, restaurants, offices and an expansion of Ajax’s De Toekomst sports complex. The district connects Ouderkerk aan de Amstel and Duivendrecht, but also Amsterdam-Zuidoost.
The name Amstelvoorde was chosen by residents of Ouder-Amstel and was festively unveiled this afternoon. Residents came up with a total of 372 names. Three were chosen from these and could be voted on. Amstelvoorde received almost half of the votes. Proud resident Ron Korrel came up with this winning name.
‘Place of meeting and connection’
“This name was not invented behind a desk, but originated from the community itself,” said Mayor Susanne de Roy van Zuidewijn. “Residents have thought along, participated and voted.”
It is clear where the first part of the name comes from: the Amstel River has been the lifeline of the area for centuries. The term ‘voorde’ is probably less known.
The mayor explains that this is ‘a ford in a river’.
“Traditionally a place of meeting and connection. That is exactly what this new place of residence wants to be. A place that builds a bridge.”
