Tuesday, 1:49 p.m.: Wimbledon comes to Berlin – with a legendary event Williams double

Meanwhile, a message is making the rounds that is making many tennis hearts beat faster: Serena Williams will continue her comeback tour at the prestigious tournament in Wimbledon after her stop in Berlin – together with her sister Venus.

The Americans will receive a wild card for the doubles of the classic lawn, which begins in less than two weeks, as the All England Club announced. The Williams sisters have won three Olympic gold medals and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including six at Wimbledon – the first in 2000 and the last in 2016.

Tuesday, 1:22 p.m.: Lys moves into the next round

Eva Lys beat her opponent Frech 7:6 (9:7) and 6:3 and is now in the round of 16. The only German player in the main draw gave up her first serve game, but immediately got the break. The world number 80. missed several set points when the score was 6:5 and the tiebreak had to decide. There, Lys initially gave up a 5-2 lead, but then, with a bit of luck, secured the set with a net roller. In the second set, the Hamburger was clearly the better player and prevailed confidently.

Tuesday, 11:40 a.m.: Punctual start in Grunewald, waiting for Williams and Gauff

After the rain problems the day before, the matches in Grunewald were able to start promptly at 11 a.m. today with a mix of sun and clouds. For the duel between Germany’s Eva Lys and Poland’s Magdalene Frech, many seats remained empty in the Steffi Graf Stadium, but that will certainly change in the early evening.

Then the eagerly awaited Serena Williams takes to the pitch for her first doubles in the capital. Together with the Czech Karolina Muchova she meets Giuliana Olmos and Erin Routliffe. The match will not start before 5:30 p.m.

While world number one Aryna Sabalenka and French Open winner Jelena Rybakina are still taking a break, star player Coco Gauff can also be seen in doubles today. Together with Jessica Pegula she will play on the side court against Anastassija Potapova and Diana Schnaider from 2 p.m.

Monday, 9:05 p.m.: Eva Lys opens the main field

As the weather improves, the game plan is also taking shape. It is now clear that Eva Lys will open the main draw on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Lys is the only German in the main field and starts thanks to a wildcard. The first round opponent will be the Polish Magdalene Frech.

Serena Williams’ doubles pairing is not expected before Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Monday, 4:25 p.m.: Brockmann is out

And then it was just one. Tessa Johanna Brockmann from Itzehoe loses her match in the second qualifying round against the Dutch Suzan Lamens 2:6 and 2:6. So Eva Lys is actually the only German in the main field.

Monday, 3:10 p.m.: Williams is training, Brockmann’s opponent has been determined

While Serena Williams on hers Instagram channel After sharing the first training pictures from Berlin and continuing to wait for her appearance, Tessa Johanna Brockmann’s next opponent has now been determined. In the second qualifying round, the 20-year-old will face Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens. Eva Lys, who has a wildcard, is still the only German in the main field.

Monday, 2:17 p.m.: Doubles with Serena Williams not yet sold out

There are still free places for the Berlin comeback of the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams. On Tuesday, among other duels, there will be a doubles match between Williams/Muchova (Czech Republic) and the Australian-Mexican duo Routliffe/Olmos. According to the organizer, around 500 day tickets are still available.

The 44-year-old American Williams last played in the Steffi Graf Stadium in 2008.

Monday, 1:02 p.m.: Brockmann defeats Parks

The German tennis player Tessa Johanna Brockmann has moved into the second qualifying round at the Berlin Tennis Open. She won the continuation of the duel against the American Alycia Parks, which was interrupted on Sunday due to rain, in three sets (4:6, 6:4, 6:2). Who and when exactly the Itzeho native will be competing against on Tuesday will be announced later in the day.

Ella Seidel from Hamburg, however, was eliminated after being defeated by Frenchwoman Diane Parry in two sets (3:6, 4:6).

Monday, 10:04 a.m.: Focus on Frech, Zhang – and continuation of the rain duels

Today’s highlight in the Steffi Graf Stadium is the meeting between the world number three from Poland, Magdalena Frech, and Zhang Shuai from China (seventh place).

Before that, the duels between Ella Seidel (Hamburg) and the French Diane Parry as well as Tessa Johanna Brockmann (Itzehoe) and the American Alycia Parks, which were postponed on Sunday due to rain, will be completed at 10:30 a.m.

The eagerly awaited start in the doubles by Serena Williams and the star players Iryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff (both in the Enzel) will take place on Tuesday.

Monday, 8:32 a.m.: Mixed quality record

Because of the weather, the qualifying rounds for the main field were not completed as planned over the weekend. And so there is still hope that German players will also make it into the regular tournament tree. Tessa Johanna Brockmann was leading 4:6, 6:4 and 4:2 in her match against the American Alycia Parks before the game had to be interrupted. Just like Ella Seidel’s encounter against Diane Perry, which the Frenchwoman leads 6:3 and 3:1.

However, Tamara Korpatsch, Milena Steinkamp and Noma Noha Akugue have already been eliminated.

Monday, 6:55 a.m.: All eyes on Serena Williams

Although she only competes in doubles, she has a very special focus: Serena Williams. The 23-time Grand Slam winner wants to know it again at the age of 44 and is playing her second comeback tournament in Berlin. Even if only in doubles with the Czech Karolina Muchova, currently tenth in the world singles rankings.

However, it is not yet clear when Williams/Muchova will play their first round duel against the Australian-Mexican duo Routliffe/Olmos. Tournament director Markus Zoecke expects Tuesday or Wednesday: “Monday is unlikely. Of course we also depend on the weather.” That means there is a 50 percent chance of rain on Monday with just four hours of sunshine. But from Tuesday it should get better – and really hot towards the end of the week (34 degrees on Friday).

Monday, 6:00 a.m.: Test run for Wimbledon

Since the tournament was revived as a grass tournament in 2021 after a 13-year break, it has become increasingly popular. Not only among the spectators, but above all among the players, for whom the Berlin Tennis Open seems to fit perfectly into the preparation plan for the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon (June 29th – July 12th).

The only player missing from the top 10 in the world rankings this year is Poland’s Iga Swiatek. Last year’s winner Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic is also not there.
