Cape Verde has created a mega stunt during its debut at a World Cup. The Blue Sharks of national coach Bubista played a 0-0 draw in Atlanta against European champion Spain, who were labeled in advance as one of the top favorites for the world title.
The tie will be celebrated on a grand scale on the archipelago off the west coast of Africa, where around 500,000 people live. Rotterdam is often affectionately called the tenth island of Cape Verde thanks to its large Cape Verdean community, with 35,000 to 40,000 inhabitants.
This close bond arose in the 1960s and 1970s when many Cape Verdeans moved to Rotterdam, where they mainly live in Delfshaven (Rotterdam-West). There, thousands of people watched the World Cup debut of ‘Cabo Verde’ on large screens.
Yamal cannot save Spain either
The belief in a draw increased by the minute. In the 90th minute, Cape Verde even had a chance to make it 1-0. Not that it would have been deserved, because Spain had 74 percent of the ball and the odds ratio was 21-5 (8-1 on target) in Spain’s favor. Yet there is clearly work to be done for national coach Luis de la Fuente and his players.
The substitution of star player Lamine Yamal (in the 70th minute) and the fast left winger Nico Williams (in the 86th minute) could also not prevent Spain’s false start.
Cape Verde dreams of more
After the surprising draw, Cape Verde will suddenly believe that the World Cup debutant can reach the sixteenth finals. After this, matches against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia are scheduled in group H.
Of the six Rotterdammers in the Cape Verde selection, five played. Only experienced striker Garry Mendes Rodrigues remained on the bench. Deroy Duarte came on for his brother Laros Duarte, three years older, after an hour of play.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha was the standout player in his 82nd international match with eight saves
