A 28-year-old man has been arrested at Cape Town airport for transporting 150 poisonous scorpions. According to police, he had hidden the living animals under his clothing.

Police received a report on Friday about a person in possession of scorpions at Cape Town International Airport. In his luggage, officers found 150 live scorpions hidden under his clothing. The man was immediately arrested for possession of wild animals and will appear in court on Monday.

It is not yet clear where exactly the man wanted to travel. The scorpions have now been housed in a wildlife sanctuary.

Wildlife trafficking remains a major problem in South Africa. Criminal gangs capture animals such as rhinos, elephants, pangolins and reptiles to sell them on the black market.
