Confusion due to technical glitch: FIFA reacts
A technical glitch caused confusion among the TV audience during the World Cup match between Switzerland and Qatar (1-1). Because a brief disruption prevented the creation of the onside graphic animation before the penalty awarded to Switzerland, spectators and experts puzzled over a possible offside position before Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada’s foul on Remo Freuler.
“I would have expected an offside position,” said former referee Thorsten Kinhöfer on ZDF. “I can only imagine that the camera showed the wrong perspective or the semi-automatic offside line failed.”

The world football association Fifa pointed out in a statement that the video assistant’s workflow was not affected by the technical glitch. “The lines used by VAR to check the positions of the players concerned did not indicate that the attacker was in an offside position in either situation immediately before the penalty decision,” FIFA said.
The referee’s decision was therefore in accordance with the rules. Former Bundesliga professional Breel Embolo (17th minute) converted the penalty to give the Swiss the lead. However, Qatar equalized in added time.
