Manuel Venderbos, who presents Angela de Jong’s AD media podcast, causes astonishment with two jokes about skin color. “All the monkeys gather!”, the presenter now shouts again.
AD presenter Manuel Venderbos seems to have a kind of obsession with jokes about skin color. There is a pattern of comments that he probably considers provocative and funny, but which in practice are mainly uncomfortable. And this week that is reflected again in the media podcast by Angela de Jong.
Duo Penotti
Manuel’s skin color joke in last week’s episode was about Shirma Rouse, who will make a program about Aretha Franklin together with Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. “A bit From Left To Right with Snollebolleke in Paris, only in America as Duo Penotti,” he notes.
His colleague Marcus den Blanken reacts with surprise. “Ooh, is this joke possible?”
Manuel: “Is that no longer possible?”
Marcus: “Yes, that is one from the nineties.”
Collect all the monkeys
And this week Manuel’s joke is about the Nike advertisement featuring players from the Dutch national team (see below). It opens with mainly black players and there are on the YouTubeNike page has also made several comments about it. “Where are the Dutch?”, for example.
Manuel says: “It’s a bit of a Lion King-like vibe. I just don’t understand why all the monkeys collect.”
Tigers
His colleague Gudo Tienhooven is shocked. “What do you mean by that, Manuel?”
Manuel: “Nothing at all. In the beginning you see people kind of scrambling to start the match, and that has a kind of Lion King-like…”
Gudo: “Tigers aren’t monkeys, are they? I’m going to make it very difficult for you now.”
Manuel concludes: “No, they look more like monkeys than lions, for example. That would have been better.”
