Italy’s 2006 World Cup hero should give Florence new impetus. In Germany his name is closely linked to the end of the summer fairy tale.

Fiorentina have hired Fabio Grosso as their new coach. The 48-year-old has a contract until the end of June 2028 and is moving from league rivals Sassuolo to Florence. He led the promoted team to eleventh place last season and thus confidently managed to stay in the class. Florence finished the round in 15th place under Grosso’s predecessor Paolo Vanoli.

As a player, the Roman native celebrated his greatest success in Italy’s 2006 World Cup triumph in Germany. In the final against France, Grosso scored the decisive penalty. In the semi-final he scored 1-0 against the DFB team shortly before the end of extra time. Alessandro Del Piero made it 2-0.

Grosso began his coaching career in the youth ranks of Juventus Turin. In addition to a few stints in Italy, Grosso has also been on the sidelines at French club Olympique Lyon.
