The presence of Manu Ginobili in a supermarket in the city of San Antonio, Texas, generated an unusual scene that combined closeness, surprise and emotion among customers who were doing their daily shopping. The former Argentine NBA player actively participated in a solidarity day at a branch of the HEB chainwhere he not only interacted with the attendees, but also collaborated by serving customers and hand-delivering products, in a gesture that quickly went viral on social networks.

The event was held within the framework of an initiative promoted by the HEB network, which announced the donation of $500,000 for the construction of youth basketball courts in different communities in the state of Texas. The activity was attended by historical figures linked to the San Antonio Spursreinforcing the link between the franchise, the local community and sports development projects for youth.

Emanuel Ginobili was not alone. He was accompanied by his former Spurs teammateTim Duncanwith whom he shared a large part of the most successful stage of the Texan franchise. Both appeared relaxed, walked through the aisles of the supermarket, talked with customers and actively participated in the symbolic delivery of products, in a climate that combined the institutional nature of the event with a strong imprint of closeness to the public.

The reception from the people was immediate and effusive. Customers who initially did not notice the presence of the basketball legends were surprised to find themselves face to face with Ginobili and Duncan on the shelves. Requests for photos, autographs and greetings quickly began, while supermarket employees also joined the general enthusiasm. Far from maintaining a distant attitude, both former players were willing, smiling and attentive to each person who approached.

For several minutes, the Bahía Blanca native stood at one of the cash registers, where he simulated customer service tasks, scanning products and delivering bags, in a scene that aroused applause and laughter among those present. In parallel, Duncan collaborated in the replacement of merchandise and accompanied some clients on their tours, generating an unusual dynamic for a commercial space of these characteristics.

The central axis of the activity was the promotion of access to sports for low-income youth. The announced donation will allow the construction and renovation of basketball courts in different locations in Texas, with the aim of promoting sports practice and offering safe recreational spaces. The participation of the legendary athletes brought visibility to the initiative and reinforced the social impact of the project.

Ginobili’s connection to San Antonio remains deep even years after his retirement. The Bahi native played 16 seasons in the NBA, all with the Spurs, where he became one of the most influential figures in the history of the franchise. He was a key player in winning four championships (2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014) and was part of the historic “Big Three” with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker.

Throughout his NBA career, Ginobili stood out for his innovative style of play, his leadership ability and his impact both as a starter and off the bench, a role in which he revolutionized the sixth man position. In 2008 he was voted Best Sixth Man in the league, and finished his career with more than 14,000 points converted, in addition to being among the players with the most three-pointers in Spurs history.

With the Argentine team, his legacy is even more transcendent. He was the leader of the so-called “Golden Generation” who won the gold medal in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, in a historic campaign that included the memorable victory against the United States. He also won the bronze medal in Beijing 2008 and was runner-up in the Basketball World Cup in Indianapolis 2002.
