A characteristic house with a rich history is for sale in Nieuwkuijk. The white building on Onsenoortsestraat dates from 1934 and started as a village shop. After that, from 1967 onwards you could find a neighborhood café there. “That was Café ‘t Fust, a small business that many people here still remember,” says real estate agent Angeliene Magielse of Staete Vlijmen. The detached building has now been a private home for decades, with plenty of space behind the facade.
“We were able to find the construction drawings of the café,” says the real estate agent. “It was really a small village café, so certainly not for parties and celebrations, but a place where people from the neighborhood met each other. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find much about the shop that was there before that time.”
Space for a large family
The current owners bought the property in 1999. Over the years they have renovated it extensively to turn it into a home with space for a large family. “They did most of it at the time, but they also took steps afterwards. For example, the bathroom was renovated a few years ago.” Now that the children have flown out, the house is becoming too big and that is why it is for sale.
“It is a house with a lot of atmosphere,” says Magielse. “Moreover, you can use it in many directions.” The house itself has five bedrooms. Outside in the garden there is another house with its own living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. According to the real estate agent, such a space where someone can live independently is a big plus. “The owners used it as a guest room. But it is also very suitable for informal care, for example, as you now see more and more often. Or you can turn it into an office or studio.”
The living room is spacious and light and you still have the original beamed ceiling. In the middle of the house you will find the kitchen, which is fully equipped and has enough space for a dining table. This is clearly a central place that invites you to cook extensively, drink coffee together or linger at the table for a long time after dinner. You walk into the garden through the utility room. It faces south and is partially covered, so you can actually sit outside all year round.
With just over two thousand inhabitants, Nieuwkuijk is a small village without a supermarket. “But you will find it in Vlijmen and Nieuwkuijk is so close to it that you really have to pay close attention to know which of the two villages you are in,” says the real estate agent, laughing. “Drunen is also close by and you can also reach the A59 in no time with your car. You actually have the advantage of both worlds here: you live in a village environment, but everything is still close by.”
The house has been on the market for a while, but the ideal buyer has not yet presented itself. The asking price is 675,000 euros. According to the real estate agent, as a buyer you should mainly be looking for a house with a lot of charm and character. “You will never get the atmosphere you find in this house in a new-build home. It really is a house that someone should fall in love with.”
